Research Fellowship

For people who are seeking a research position after graduation and ready to do one or two years of research. I found this website for northwestern university in Chicago which offers nice opportunities.

http://www.tgs.northwestern.edu/post...irs/positions/

The job title is called post-doctoral fellow(Research fellow)

Alsalam alikom shabab: Thanks for the helpful info. I have a few questions about research:
1-Is the research exp helpful in residency application( if somenone did research during residency application , nothing will be published before interviews or even by match day)?
2- If the researcher would sponser a visa, what kind of visa, I heard it is only H1? would that affect choices regarding residency(most univ programs are J1)?
3-I tried to look into univ websited but truley I didn't know how to find people currently doing reseach , would you please post one example with one website ,so we can follow?
4-what is the perfect time to apply for research (before 2,4,8 months?)? and If one will do research between July(year of grad) and June(year of match) is that a resonable time?
5- Do you think doing a two year research then applying to residency worths it? I mean will it increase DRamatically your chances of getting better residency program ?
Thank you very much for your help.I would say nothing but : Jazak Allah khairan

Wa alikom assalam
1- Research experience is very very important to imporve your applicantion for residency and for fellowship. the more you do, the better programs iyou will consider you and larger number of interviews you will get. Offcourse if you have research with publication, that will be the best, but if the research result is not fully published, you can mention in your application like: in porgress, submitted, accepted for publication..

2-Yes it is H1, and it can affect the future application choice, but remember that some program they like applicants to have previous issued visa.

3-See this page http://www.neurology.northwestern.edu/ they have a lot of sub-departments, go to faculty, many of them have ongoing research studies. you can start from here, and this is a good example for your to start.

4-I think 2-4 months is reaonable, and one year reseach is more than enough if you are planning to take all this period before application. You dont have to finish at June, remember that residency application start on September and intervies dont start before November. so I think you should plan your time around this period. And even i have seen some people continuing research during interviews.

5- I think one year should be fine, remember that most of research opportunies are volunteer, there is exceptions offcourse. So it is not easy to spend long time unpaid.

Hopefully that help...

Dr.Bassel thank you so much. your info and example were very helpful. Pardon me , but I have some qs that still confuse me a little:
1- which is better to go into clinical reserach or basic science research regarding: how easy to get, importance for residency, importance for fellowship, visa decision , nature of work?
2-If I was issued H1 visa , as I know most univ programs offer only J1. So why couldn't I apply for H1 for the purpose of research. and if i match in J1 program I apply for J1 for residency .?
3-If research going to be volunteer then how would they issue the visa? No one can stay on B1 visa for a year right?
Thank you .

1-Both are good, any good research is very good for both residency and fellowship, most important that you end up with result and publication. In my experience it is easier to publish more papers and get faster results in clinical research, otherwise in basic research you can stay for 3 years to reach on hypothesis and one possible paper. Regarding nature of work, I found it more intersting in clinical and more dry in the basic.

2-Usually if you got H1 visa, you look for future programs who sponor H1 visa, I have seen an extreme cases when they switch to J1 because they did not find H1. I am not very expert in the visas, you can see the visa section in this forum and you can ask your questions and experts will answer you.

3-No voluteer with visa. Visa means that you will be employee and you will be paid. You can stay for one year in a research, either you do visa extension or you go to Syria and come back

Hopefully this help

Dear doctors,
Thank you very much for the helpful info........Sorry to be talking about my personal situation here but thought about sharing some ideas with you, as you may help me
I will be applying for next year match inchallah, as i still have step 1 to go through, right now doing one year internship at AUB. Already in the process of trying to find a research spot next year during applying for the match, but as you all know its tough to find, as well as the via issues complications!! Anyway, was thinking if you know any doable and affordable MS/MPH one year programs that can be done during next year, if i don't get lucky finding a a research spot.....Thank you all for your help & all the best
