» Message from the SAMS Midwest Chapter President
Jun 19, 2010 - 3:25 PM - by Bassel Atassi
Dear Friends
I am pleased and honored to write to you as the new SAMS Mid-West chapter president. Over the last eight years, your chapter has grown tremendously with the help of both previous board members and the members at large. it is from the wisdom however, to pause every now and then and look back at the past track, learn from short comings and build upon good achievements. Societies and organizations are like human, they start from infancy stage and grow up through childhood to gradually reach maturity and adulthood. we ,in SAMS Mid-West chapter, are determined to continue the path for maturity, and for that we will need the help and feed back of all dear members. In the coming two years we will work on energizing membership, solidifying old and good projects and start new projects and events. We will try to emphasize on the "giving back to the community" aspect of this society, choose relevant speakers for our presentations, collaborate with other local and national organizations, be open for any suggestion or constructive criticism, and be transparent in our actions and dealings.
I am thankful for the previous board members (Dr. Y. Kakajy, Dr. H. Alzien, Dr. R. Lotfi and the others) for their hard work, I am grateful to you ,dear members, for your trust in me and my board. I am fortunate to have some of your finest members with me in the board, they all are full of energy and enthusiasm and looking forward to serve you and the organization in the best way possible. we will continue our cooperation with SAMS National, and other chapters to fulfill this society's goals, and let's our slogan for the next few years be:

For a Healthier Future

About USMLE
The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a three-step examination for medical licensure in the United States and is sponsored by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME).
The Three Steps of the USMLE
Step 1 assesses whether you understand and can apply important concepts of the sciences basic to the practice of medicine, with special emphasis on principles and mechanisms underlying health, disease, and modes of therapy.
Step 1 ensures mastery of not only the sciences that provide a foundation for the safe and competent practice of medicine in the present, but also the scientific principles required for maintenance of competence through lifelong learning.
Step 1 has approximately 350 multiple-choice test items, divided into seven 60-minute blocks, administered in one eight-hour testing session.
Step 2 assesses whether you can apply medical knowledge, skills, and understanding of clinical science essential for the provision of patient care under supervision and includes emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention.
Step 2 ensures that due attention is devoted to principles of clinical sciences and basic patient-centered skills that provide the foundation for the safe and competent practice of medicine.
Step 2 CK has approximately 370 multiple-choice test items, divided into eight 60-minute blocks, administered in one nine-hour testing session.
Step 2 CS has 11 or 12 patient cases. You will have 15 minutes for each patient encounter and 10 minutes to record the patient note. If you do not use the entire 15 minutes for the patient encounter, the remaining time will be added to the time you have to record the patient note. The testing session is approximately eight hours.
Step 3 assesses whether you can apply medical knowledge and understanding of biomedical and clinical science essential for the unsupervised practice of medicine, with emphasis on patient management in ambulatory settings.
Step 3 provides a final assessment of physicians assuming independent responsibility for delivering general medical care.
Step 3 has approximately 480 multiple-choice test items, divided into blocks of 35 to 50 items. You will have 45 to 60 minutes to complete each of these blocks.
