OUR ACTIVITIES
In accordance with its mission of enhancing professional, educational, and humanitarian commitment, SAMS’s auxiliary hosted an all day seminar on Sunday, Sept. 17th.2006 Mr. Edmund Arroyo, a licensed clinical social worker at Hinsdale South High School, presented the lecture entitled Investing in our Children: The Best 401K Plan.
Several vital subjects were outlined and discussed. Among them were some very sensitive issues such as dealing with teens, parent support and understanding, parental involvement and inter-generation conflicts.
Some key points stressed by Mr. Arroyo were:
- The lack of a close relationship with both parents could have prolonged negative effects on children's behavior, including developing low self-esteem.
- The extremely important role that father's play in their children's lives, especially with their sons.
- We, as parents, have the responsibility of investing in our children by providing unconditional love, plenty of encouragement, respect, trust, and positive feedback.
- The distinction between permissive vs. authoritarian behavior toward our children as well as the struggle between involvement vs. rejection.
Those were just a few of the powerful issues that Mr. Arroyo covered in his lecture.
We, as the auxiliary committee of SAMS-Midwest Chapter, believe in the necessity of engaging people with our community who can offer and share their expertise on various issues of concern. We offer as our commitment to you our time, efforts, hearts and minds as a way to serve our community.
The Auxiliary Committee would like to thank everyone who attended the lecture and would like to invite everyone not to miss any future lectures, workshops and events. |
